QUETTA: Sardar Akhtar Mengal, President of the Pakistan National Party, has said that his party supported the No Confidence Motion in order to strengthen democracy and democratic traditions in Balochistan.
Speaking on the floor of the House after electing a new Chief Minister, the third by the same Assembly in a single constitutional tenure, Mr. Mengal said that if the new Chief Minister defies democratic traditions and practices, “we will oppose him too.” He said that we faced a dictator like General Pervez Musharraf and the present Chief Minister has no position against him.
The BNP President said that he would provide land free of cost if the present Chief Minister builds a cancer hospital somewhere in Balochistan.
He was of the view that the Members of the Treasury Benches had revolted against the outgoing Chief Minister as a result of unfair handling and injustices done to them. “They found no other option but to join the opposition to overthrow the provincial Government,” the former Chief Minister told the House in plain words.
He was of the view that the revolt was the prime result of injustices done to the concerned people. Some people remember democracy only after losing power and authority, Sardar Akhtar Mengal told the House.
The BNP President praised the PMAP and his candidate Liaquat Agha for contesting elections of the Leader of the House and upheld the democratic traditions.
He said he and his party had given vote of trust to the past Government and this time again he reposed confidence on the new Chief Minister with the hope that he would uphold the democratic traditions and in case of any undemocratic action, he and his party would oppose it with full force.
“We will be on the forefront in any violation of constitutional order and democracy,” Sardar Mengal said. He recalled that people like Benazir Bhutto, Mian Nawaz Sharif and Asif Zardari were found helpless in fighting the more powerful elements; we are very small in this context to win a major battle for democratic rights.
He said that the stamping the ballot papers in a fraudulent manner is no democracy. He said hundreds of billions of Balochistan were lapsed during the past four years and it was the height of incompetency in running the Provincial Government. He said despite the CPEC and development packages, people are denied drinking water facility.
